The B.I.S.T Breakdown

Eastridge staff is on board for B.I.S.T. implementation

Did your child come home the first day and mention the acronym B.I.S.T. (Behavior Intervention Support Team)? If not, he or she will! The mission of B.I.S.T. is to create a positive change toward a safe and productive learning environment for all. In classrooms, on the first day, students learned about community connections and the Three Goals for Life. The day was also spent learning key vocabulary and expectations as well as positive reinforcement tickets. Specialists are also supporting the concepts in each of their rooms. On the second day, students learned about gateway behaviors, caring confrontation, safe seat, and think sheet. Day three brought discussions about the safe seat and processing with the teacher. Students also covered making apologies. Finally, on day 4, teacher shared the five steps to accountability, triage, think sheet, the buddy room, and the focus room. These concepts will be visited throughout the year and reviewed with students as necessary. Visit with your child about these B.I.S.T. concepts.

There are posters throughout the building, both in the hallways and classroom that emphasize building procedures. Hallway Quiet Zone is an example. We ask visitors to honor the hallway quiet zone just as students and staff do. The hallway is a learning space.

The U.S. House of Representatives Designates the Second Week in September “Arts in Education Week

On July 26, 2010, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.Con.Res. 275, legislation designating the second week of September as “Arts in Education Week.” The resolution had 101 cosponsors and was authored by Representative Jackie Speier (D-CA) with encouragement and support of Broadway legend Carol Channing.

This resolution is the first Congressional expression of support celebrating all of the arts education disciplines of dance, music, theater and visual arts. This resolution comes at a key time when Congress is making plans to overhaul federal education policy through the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

The resolution seeks to support the attributes of arts education that are recognized as instrumental to developing a well-rounded education such as creativity, imagination, and cross-cultural understanding. H.Con.Res. 275 also highlights the critical link between those skills and preparing children for gaining a competitive edge in the global economy.

Please do your part in supporting arts education for you child. The arts are highly supported at Eastridge and we appreciate that support. During the “Arts in Education Week" in September consider doing an arts activity with your child whether it be attending a music event or a local museum/gallery, listening to music you wouldn't normally listen to or create a piece of art with your child. Show an interest in supporting arts education in your home.
